Data migration has historically been under-valued, under-resourced and not treated with the attention it deserves. As a result, many major migration projects have failed either partially or completely. The remedy for these failures, we believe, is to accord data migration the respect it deserves: to consider it in detail prior to the initiation of relevant projects and not as an afterthought. In turn, this will result in increased status for data migration as a discipline, which will, as a result, mean that more experienced and capable staff are attracted to this function. In a virtuous circle, this will then improve the practice of data migration, which will feedback into improved costing and delivery for broader projects that involve data migration.
