Cell phones, PDAs and other wireless voice and data input and access devices have changed the way businesses communicate and work. Virtually every department in today’s modern business has found ways to reap the benefits of wireless technology, vaulting mobile devices from yesterday’s personal ‘handy tool’ that made things a little easier, to today’s must-have technology that enables organizations to maintain operational effectiveness and competitiveness. This is especially true in field-oriented, customer-facing environments such as sales and service or in time-sensitive situations such as manufacturing and logistics, healthcare and many other fields.

While phones and PDAs were used originally just for voice communications, they are increasingly being used for wireless data communications as well, opening up a whole new world of application possibilities that include e-mail and Internet access. As the advanced capabilities of new devices that are fueling mobile application development and deployment become even more widespread, and organizations get fully on board with the tremendous productivity gains that can be achieved, the dependency on wireless mobile devices is expected to increase dramatically. Industry analyst Gartner reports that an average of 25 percent of employees in North American companies typically have wireless/mobile services; and that the penetration of wireless devices amongst professionals in the U.S. has reached 75 percent. Gartner estimates that through 2009, wireless voice and data will continue to displace wireline services, with voice and data services growing to $861 billion in 2009 (6% CAGR) – making wireless the fastest-growing segment of the communications services market – while fixed voice services are expected to decline over the same time period.

Mobile wireless devices have clearly achieved a ubiquitous presence across the full breadth of today’s corporate landscape, revolutionizing the way that employees communicate with customers, suppliers, partners and with each other, as well as how they access corporate applications and information.
