To avoid gridlock in the sky, as well as at U.S. airports, the FAA's NextGen program will transform the National Airspace System (NAS) from its current ground-based air traffic control to a satellite-based system. The FAA's System Wide Information Management (SWIM) program provides the IT infrastructure necessary to streamline data exchange and govern information between NAS users both internal to the FAA as well as industry and airline partners.
