At the recent VMworld 2012 show in San Francisco, VMware unveiled a handful of significant storage enhancements while hinting at major storage innovation for the coming years. With its overarching theme of the software-defined datacenter (SDDC), VMware is looking to make storage and networking resources flexible and dynamic in the same manner in which it has altered the server and desktop landscapes with its virtualization technologies. The storage additions are designed to overcome some of the biggest issues that are preventing more widespread adoption of virtualization – both for entry-level users and tier one enterprise applications – but should VMware's storage partners be worried?
