Overview:

IBM has never been short on breakthroughs. Deep Blue was once designed to challenge world chess champion Gary Kasparov, pushing science in ways that weren't thought possible.

Next up was Watson, the latest IBM Research Grand Challenge, designed to further the science of natural language processing through advances in question and answer technology.

Named after Thomas J Watson, the founder of IBM, Watson is a workload optimized system based on IBM DeepQA architecture running on a cluster of processor-based servers. Following four intense years of research and development, Watson debuted on Jeopardy! in February 2011, competing at the level of human experts in terms of precision, confidence and speed against two of the best-known Jeopardy! champions in Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter.

This brief white paper details Watson's workload optimized system design, how it is a glimpse into the future of systems design and why it represents a new computing paradigm.
