The major global telcos have led the competitive march from telecoms into cloud computing, and are now widely seen as credible players in cloud computing services including infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS). They have made considerable progress in little more than a year in terms of services that can compete with established players from the IT industry, the newer “pure-play” cloud computing vendors, and alternative players such as Amazon.  The major global telcos have a long heritage in providing data center managed services, and have combined this with their networking and security expertise to address customer requirements for enterprise-grade cloud computing services. Their cloud computing focus has thus far been primarily on IaaS, and this will likely continue to be the case as they build out services to appeal to a global customer base. However, all four of the telcos reviewed in this report – AT&T, BT, Orange Business Services, and Verizon Business – also have evolving roadmaps for software-as-a-service (SaaS) and communications/collaboration-as-a-service. All of these players see cloud computing as leveraging their core competencies, and Orange has coined the term “IT operator” to reflect this new role in IT services, by analogy with the traditional role as network operators. We believe that these and other major telcos will become strong players across the full spectrum of cloud computing services.
