Overview:

Any virtualization layer or hypervisor introduces a new set of demands to a server or blade environment. Although a hypervisor doesn’t require network access strictly for its virtual machine, other interconnects do. This not only means that you’ll need a server with multi-port network interface cards (NICs), but can also pigeon-hole you into buying one specific server type. Network consolidation—reducing underutilized 1 GB NICs to two 10 GB or 20 GB cards—answers this dilemma and can offer huge gains in terms of operational flexibility.
