Overview:
The volume of enterprise data is growing exponentially. It should come as no surprise that with this growth there is an increase in related challenges, risks and expense. Many of these challenges are associated with litigation and regulatory compliance. Adverse judgments, sanctions, legal expenses, and compliance initiatives are not only expensive financially, but also introduce increased personal exposure to corporate executives and other stakeholders. Since most of today's data exists in electronic format, this pressure is transferred directly to IT. The problem is that IT is limited by the technology tools currently at their disposal. Document, content, and knowledge management systems are flawed by a manual component that requires users to properly identify and classify data that should be saved. Search tools require domain expertise and the manual creation of taxonomies in order to make them work. Neither of these technologies scale and both are subject to human error and discipline. They are also static in nature while unstructured data is dynamic. Without the technology tools to properly manage unstructured data, it continues to expand unchecked, increasing corporate risk and wasting storage resources. The business value and context of data remain unknown and undiscoverable. In the meantime, the courts, shareholders, regulators, and legislators continue to mandate control of unstructured data.

This paper outlines a critical business problem: insufficient management of unstructured data. It discusses the data management problem and how it manifests in the enterprise as risks, missed opportunities, and resource sinkholes such as: e-Discovery, compliance, and an inability to reuse valuable data assets. The purpose of this white paper is to introduce the issues surrounding insufficient data management and provide information on Digital Reef's solution, including how it addresses many of the symptoms of insufficient unstructured data management, in particular, eDiscovery.
