Overview:
E-mail is mission critical to the success of your business, so you cannot just protect the data, you need to think about the entire system. Without doing so, your business can suffer through a prolonged outage. Protect the entire system by continually protecting your O/S, application and the data. Standard backup tools do not protect all three entities in unison. Protecting the entire system will dramatically reduce RPO and RTO metrics. This is called “Continuous Application Protection” or CAP.

Even the best e-mail systems are vulnerable to the evolving threats of viruses and worms. Unfortunately, it is usually too late once they enter the system and permeate just a handful of user accounts. CAP and high-frequency snapshots with integrated validation enables you to restore your system to the moment prior to the malicious code's infiltration.

In mission critical e-mail systems, it is important to have a test environment that mirrors the production system for the essential testing of new software upgrades and settings. However, most businesses lack the hardware and software resources (machines and budgets) to replicate their production systems. Therefore testing can only be performed on a limited basis, if at all. A proper backup and recovery plan should enable you to replicate your environment leveraging virtualization so you have an always-ready mirror of your production system.
